Mujaderra
Mujaderra is a hearty (and vegetarian) dish that can be eaten as a meal on its own, or served as a side dish. The main ingredients are rice and lentils, but the spices (and lots of onions) turn those simple ingredients into a classic dish that is regularly eaten in many Israeli homes. Try it for yourself and savor the flavors!
Ingredients
Israeli Olive oil
1/4 Cup
Dead sea Salt
3/4 teaspoon
Brown lentils, sorted and rinsed
1/2 Cup
Whole grain brown rice
1 Cup
water
2.5 Cup
Large white onions, sliced in thin rings
2 Pcs.
Paprika
to taste
Instructions
Step 1
Combine water, salt, and 2 table spoons oil in a saucepan and bring to a boil over medium heat. Add the brown rice and lentils to the saucepan. Once the mixture has reached a boil, cover and reduce heat to low. Let simmer for about 45 minutes, until the brown rice and lentils have cooked through.
Step 2
While the rice and lentils are simmering, prepare the onions. Heat 1/4 cup oil in a skillet over medium high heat until oil glistens and coats the bottom of the skillet. Add the thinly sliced onions, and cook for about 20 minutes, or until desired color is achieved, stirring as needed. When cooked, sprinkle the onions with paprika to taste.
Step 3
Serve Mujaderra topped with browned onions.
