Bring the spirit of the Holy Land to your Passover table with an exquisite, handmade ceramic seder plate. Batya Erdstein makes each unique plate in her Itamar studio, which is high in the mountains of Samaria.
The seder plate is the centerpiece of the Passover meal. Each item represented on the plate illustrates different aspects of the Exodus story. Batya has created six small ceramic dishes to be used to display the following:
- Maror: Bitter herbs, such as horseradish, symbolize the bitterness of slavery.
- Charoset: A mixture of fruits, nuts, and spices, representing the mortar used by the Israelites to build in Egypt.
- Karpas: A vegetable, often parsley or celery, dipped in salt water, symbolizing the tears shed during slavery.
- Z’roa: A roasted shank bone, representing the Paschal lamb sacrificed during the Exodus.
- Beitzah: A roasted egg, symbolizing the holiday offering brought to the Temple in Jerusalem.
- Chazeret: A second bitter herb, often romaine lettuce, sometimes included alongside the maror.
The plate is decorated with brightly colored wildflowers and birds in celebration of spring, the month of Passover is celebrated.
Batya’s beautiful plate is a stunning addition to your Passover tabletop collection. It makes a thoughtful gift for friends and family.
Handmade, you may expect slight variances from the plate represented in the photograph.
