Atzay Hagush is a family-owned woodworking business established by Rami and Chani Shitrit. Rami and Chani receive wood from all over Israel which they dry, cut, and work with in their woodshop. While they work with a variety of Israeli woods, they love working with olive wood as it has a unique beauty unmatched by other wood.
The olive tree is Israel’s national tree, an enduring symbol of Jewish history in the Holy Land. It represents our presence in the Holy Land thousands of years ago and our return to the ancestral Jewish homeland.
The olive tree is mentioned multiple times in the Bible and is one of the seven species of the Land of Israel, “a land of wheat and barley, of vines and fig trees and pomegranates, a land of olive oil and honey;” Deuteronomy 8:8
Just as the fruit of the olive tree has been used for millennia to make oil, light homes, and light the menorah in the Jewish Temple, the wood has also been used since ancient times for small wooden ware objects from spoons and bowls to boxes.
